Leaders on the Rise: Madi Bergh

North Shore Health is pleased to partner with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) Health Care Administration (HCAD) program. HCAD offers seniors the opportunity to participate in a full-time, 12-month administrative residency to provide further insight into the field and connect what they learned in the classroom to what’s happening in the real world. Our blog series, “Leaders on the Rise,” will give you the opportunity to meet HCAD seniors whose residency is at a North Shore center and how the experience will help shape their future career.

Madi Bergh, who lives in Bloomer, Wisconsin, began working as an Administrator-in-Training at Cornell Health Services in June 2024. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Business in Health Care Administration from UWEC in May 2025 and will remain at Cornell Health Services as their Business Office Manager.

How has the experience been at your center? My experience so far at Cornell Health Services has been very eye-opening and full of new experiences and learning opportunities. Before coming into my residency, I worked at a chiropractic clinic in my hometown, so I had exposure to a whole different side of the health care world. Coming into residency was very nerve-wracking! I didn’t really have an idea of what to expect, as I haven’t had a large exposure to the daily operations of a skilled nursing facility. I have learned more than I ever thought was possible at Cornell Health Services, but working alongside a great team has made this experience better than I imagined. The staff are super supportive and willing to answer any questions you may have. Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience so far!

Why did you decide to study healthcare administration? Originally, I started out on a path at UW-Eau Claire to become a chiropractor. After spending a couple of years in the Exercise Science program, I realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have always had a passion for healthcare, but I also really enjoy the business side of things. After discussing with my advisor, she introduced me to the Health Care Administration program at Eau Claire, and I have been a part of the program since!

What have you enjoyed about working at your center the most? I have enjoyed working at Cornell Health Services because the staff are all friendly and very knowledgeable and the work environment is always positive. All staff members communicate very effectively and work together to make sure residents receive the highest quality care. This could be a very overwhelming experience, but the staff have made the transition easy for me. They do an excellent job in including me in every experience and opportunity, which allows me to gain exposure to everything that may happen in a nursing home before I take on the role of being an administrator.

How do you think this experience at your center will help you complete your goals after graduation? I think my experience at Cornell Health Services will fully prepare me to be a Nursing Home Administrator and will allow me to pursue my future goals in the Health Care Administration field. I get to work alongside a very skilled and incredibly talented team that teaches me something every day. They are always opening me up to new opportunities, which allows me to dip my toes into every aspect of what it’s like to be an administrator.
