The Right Choice for Your Recovery Journey

The Brain Injury Center is one of two post-acute neuro-rehabilitation certified programs in the state of Wisconsin. We focus on serving individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury by providing the care they need to reach their highest level of independence and to achieve long-term goals. Individuals must have a referral from a medical provider to receive care.

We recognize the challenges associated with a traumatic brain injury. Our physicians, therapists, nurses, and support staff assess each individual’s unique injury, functional level, and personal goals, and work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

Family is important. We focus on integrating family, friends, and loved ones in the treatment plan, offering support, compassion, and education. Together, we are able to help each individual with a brain injury regain the self-confidence to move on to the next stage of recovery.

The environment in which individuals are treated is important to their long-term success. Our secure, home-like center is located on a tree-lined property, within walking distance to the village of Cedarburg. Our close proximity to neighborhood activities and social outings affords us the opportunity to develop and strengthen the skills each individual needs to safely re-enter their communities and their lives.

My husband was a patient on the Brain Injury Unit for a little over a year after spending nine months in hospitals and inpatient Acute Rehab. Simplified Brain-Behavior Relationships

The brain controls important functions like movement, digestion, breathing, and sensory perception (for example, sight, touch, and taste). It also controls higher functions like thinking, learning, and emotions. We feel it is essential for both the individual with the brain injury and their loved ones to understand the functional areas of the brain to help guide them through the recovery process.

Frontal Lobe: Initiation, problem-solving, judgment, inhibition of behavior, planning/anticipation, self-monitoring, motor planning, personality/emotions, awareness of abilities/limitations, organization, attention/concentration, mental flexibility, speaking

Temporal Lobe: Memory, hearing, understanding language, organization, and sequencing

Brain Stem: Breathing, heart rate, arousal/consciousness, sleep/wake functions, attention/concentration

Cerebellum: Balance, coordination, skilled motor activity

Occipital Lobe: Vision

Parietal Lobe: Sense of touch, differentiation: size/shape/color, spatial perception, visual perception
